What is your motivation for buying an electric truck?
Let’s be honest – the process for buying an electric truck is a little more complicated than buying a diesel. You need to carefully assess how the truck will be used and how it will be recharged. This means that the motivation for electrifying your fleet is not always based on the bottom line or even efficiency. Here are just a few of the factors that you need to consider :
- What is your company’s sustainability plan?
If your company is publicly traded then you are well aware of the new SEC reporting requirement to explain what steps you plan to take to reduce your impact on climate change. That plan may include reducing emissions by adding BEV trucks to your fleet.
Don’t think you are off the hook if your company is privately held. Many large companies now require their contractors to submit a sustainability report to help demonstrate how environmental protection goals are being met.
- Does your state now or will it in the near future have mandatory ZEV fleet requirements?
Beginning with California in 2024, there are 17 states that agreed to significantly reduce emissions by increasing the number of ZEVs on their highways. Larger fleets will be required to include ZEVs in their new truck purchases each year.
Do you run a route that has frequent stops, noise level restrictions, and returns to base each day?
That type of route works best for battery electric trucks like the Kenworth T680e and K270E or K370E. Frequent braking regenerates the battery charge. Overnight parking makes charging a simple task. Noise is minimal and emissions are zero so they easily comply with city ordinances.
The answers to these three questions will lay a good foundation for making the right decision about electrifying your fleet. Of course, there are other considerations that will come up as we keep moving through this process. Next up, Design!
